Stuffed Animal Day in the Dog Library

Humans weren’t normally allowed in the dog library. But on Stuffed Animal Day, Margaret let them in. What dog doesn’t love a good stuffed toy?

The humans came with stuffed teddy bears, plush puppies, stuffed bunnies, and a slightly used stuffed alligator. Margaret put them all on a table in the middle of the library, along with the other library toys.

Ripping out the stuffing

Most dogs loved ripping out the stuffing from a stuffed animal. Afterall, the stuffing wasn’t doing the animal any good by staying inside.

Playing with the stuffing

There were plenty of games you could play with the stuffing.

One was spreading the stuffing around the library and into the corners. This was also known as the Hide the Stuffing game.

The only game Margaret wouldn’t let them play was putting the stuffing back in the animal and then ripping it out again. Sometimes the dogs forgot which stuffing went in which animal.

But there were other stuffing games the dogs could play.

The Ripping Race – This game was about the time it took to rip out the stuffing. Margaret had to use her counting skills, but she wasn’t very good at it. She could only count to eight, which was the number of toes she had on her back paws.

Dogs that ripped out the stuffing in eight minutes or less got a new squeaky toy. The dogs who took their time ripping got a thin stick.

Stuffing Football –  This game started when a dog put some stuffing in his mouth. He kept it there until the stuffing got all wet and clumpy. Then he tossed it into the air. Another dog would try to catch it, and then he ran around the library with the clumpy thing in his mouth.

Guess That Scent – The stuffed animals all had different scents. Some had stuffing that smelled like the animal it once lived it. For example, one dog guessed a stuffed teddy bear smelled like trees and honey. Another dog thought a stuffed rabbit smelled like carrots, grass, and cotton balls.

Scout, the head chef in the library’s kitchen, liked to use some of these stuffing scents in his story recipes. He particularly liked the scent of cotton balls. He thought he’d use it in a story about rabbit tails.
